R.I. Family Shelter gets Walmart grant

WARWICK – The Rhode Island Family Shelter in Warwick received a $12,500 grant from the Walmart as part of the corporation’s “12 Days of Giving” holiday campaign.
The grant was given on Dec. 18, the ninth day of the 12-day campaign that will award a total of $1.5 million to 140 organizations across the country that provide services including food, shelter, and medical care for those in need.
The ninth day focused on nonprofits that provide shelter and support. Fifteen such nonprofits across the country were awarded a total of $187,500.
“For some, home for holidays just isn’t possible. In fact, more than 600,000 people across the U.S. are currently homeless,” said Sylvia Matthews Burwell, president of the Walmart Foundation, in a statement. “Walmart supports the essential work of local nonprofit organizations that provide shelter to men, women, and children in need. We hope these grants will help give more people a safe, warm place to rest.
The Rhode Island Family Shelter was the only New England organization to receive the grant. Selections were based on Walmart’s November call for submissions that brought in more than 20,000 nominations via Faceboook. A Walmart Foundation panel selected the winning nonprofits.
