PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s high school students can now access $1.8 million in college scholarships managed by the Rhode Island Foundation, according to a Thursday announcement made by the nonprofit philanthropic organization.

Neil D. Steinberg, president and CEO of the foundation, said: “This assistance can turn dreams into reality for our donors and the recipients.”

Rhode Island Foundation scholarships are available in multiple areas of interest ranging from social work to the arts and textile technology, while others exist to help defray the costs of books, tuition and fees.

In addition, a selection of the scholarships is focused on geographic location. For example, the Brian Moretti Scholarship Fund and the Holly Charette Scholarship are available to Cranston residents, while Warwick residents are eligible for the Marissa Salabert Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Daniel Brian Cohen Scholarship.

Also available to the state’s high school seniors are gender-, income- and ethnicity-specific scholarship opportunities, including the B. Jae Clanton Scholarship at the Urban League of Rhode Island, which is awarded to students of color, and the Patty & Melvin Alperin First Generation Scholarship, which targets high school seniors who are the first in their families to go to college.

Jelit Martinez, a Pawtucket resident and University of Rhode Island sophomore studying wildlife and conservation biology, who recently received assistance from the Alperin fund, said: “A lot of things about college are challenging, including finding the resources to pay for books and fees. The scholarship I received helps take the pressure off and lets me concentrate on doing well in my classes.”
