R.I., Mass. record 7 cent drop in gasoline price

PROVIDENCE – Continuing its sustained trend, the price for self-serve, regular gasoline fell in the last week in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts by 7 cents per gallon, according to the weekly AAA Southern New England survey of prices.
“Gas prices have fallen at a pace that would have been unthinkable just a few months ago,” said Lloyd P. Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs at AAA Southern New England, in a statement. Strong supplies and the recent decision by OPEC not to reduce production have resulted in plunging crude oil prices, leading to lower prices at the pump, AAA added.
The Monday survey revealed an average price for a gallon of gas to be $2.87 in Rhode Island and $2.79 in Massachusetts, 19 and 11 cents more than the national average of $2.68 per gallon, respectively.
The Rhode Island price is 15 cents higher than it was a month ago and 63 cents more than it was a year ago. Massachusetts has seen an 18 cent drop in price in the last month, while it has seen the same 63 cent-drop over the last year.
Prices for other grades of fuel in the Ocean State ranged from $3.13 for midgrade unleaded to $3.30 for premium unleaded to $3.46 for diesel. The range in Massachusetts went from $3.09 for midgrade unleaded to $3.22 for premium unleaded to $3.46 for diesel.
“Today’s dramatic price drop is another holiday gift to consumers. With less money going into the tank, motorists have more much-needed cash at a time when they can certainly use it,” added Mary Maguire, Director of Public and Legislative Affairs at AAA Southern New England, in prepared remarks.
