R.I., Mass. snap gas price rise streak, see 4 cent decline

PROVIDENCE – For the first time since Thanksgiving, the price of gasoline has fallen in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts, according to AAA Northeast’s latest survey of gas prices, released Monday.

The average price for self-serve, unleaded regular gasoline fell 4 cents per gallon in both the Ocean State and the Bay State, to $2.31 per gallon and $2.25 per gallon, respectively. The range for the two gas offerings ranged from $2.23 to $2.49 per gallon in Rhode Island, compared with $2.15 to $2.39 per gallon in Massachusetts.

Prices for the other grades of gasoline in the Ocean State ranged from $2.58 for midgrade unleaded to $2.78 for premium unleaded and $2.57 per gallon of diesel fuel. Massachusetts consumers paid an average of $2.46 per gallon for midgrade unleaded, $2.62 for premium unleaded and $2.56 for diesel.

The national average for self-serve, unleaded regular gasoline is $2.34 per gallon, 3 cents more than in Rhode Island. A year ago, Rhode Islanders were paying $1.94 per gallon for the same type of fuel. A year ago, drivers in Massachusetts were paying an average of $1.87 per gallon of self-serve unleaded regular.
