PROVIDENCE - The Rhode Island Military Organization lounge officially opened at T.F. Green Airport today.

Supported and run by community volunteers, the lounge will offer military men and women a place to relax between flights.

“The new military lounge at T.F. Green Airport sends a message beyond our borders that Rhode Island is a caring place that when we see a need for our brave men and women in uniform and Veterans we address it,” said Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee at the dedication of the lounge.

The R.I. Airport Corporation donated the space on the second floor of the airport. Grants and donations from the Rhode Island State Senate, the Coventry/West Greenwich Elks Lodge #2285, Capital City Construction & Management Services Inc., Barbara Dardeen, and other local business and individuals also contributed to the project's success, according to a release by a the R.I. Airport Corporation.

The Rhode Island Realtors Association purchased the large-screen television and a refrigerator for the lounge, while Pepsi and the Girl Scouts have also donated beverages and snacks.

“The generosity and support we have received from the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, numerous donors and countless volunteers will continue the success of the military lounge at T. F. Green Airport for many years to come,” said Lori Ashness, Vice Chair of the R.I. Military Organization. “Having the airport lounge will be a comfort to servicemen and women traveling on behalf of our country.”

The lounge will be staffed by volunteers from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. Transportation and lodging information will also available there for military members who need assistance.

Here is the link for the volunteer application:

The requirements for volunteering are: 1) Filling out an application (ATTACHED), 2) Acquiring a current BCI (background) check from the Attorney General’s Office and 3) Attending a brief orientation class. We will be very flexible with scheduling classes and I have included instructions for obtaining the BCI via regular mail as well as in person at the Attorney General's Office in Providence, RI.

Our primary goal is to provide a comfortable and welcoming place for our Military Members and Veterans to relax and regroup during their travels through our State. You will be an important person in helping make their visit an enjoyable and relaxing one.

The volunteer times are in 4 hour segments (except for the last segment) and are open to the schedules of our volunteers. The times are 7am - 11am OR 11am - 3pm OR 3pm - 7pm and finally, a 3 hour shift, 7pm - 10pm. The RIMO Military Lounge will be open 7 days a week. If you could give a minimum of 4 hours a month, it would be appreciated!

Please remember: You do not have to have your BCI or even you completed application to attend the Orientation class. We will have extra applications on hand and a notary there if one is needed.
