PROVIDENCE — The $220 million South Street Landing project will have a later occupancy for the state Nursing Education Center, the developer has announced.
The Rhode Island Nursing Education Center, a joint collaboration of the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College, will start classes in the new facility in the fall of 2017 instead of mid-year. The new completion date for that portion of the project is January 2017.
As a result of the delayed move-in date, the state will save about $3 million in lease payments on the facility.
CV Properties LLC, the developer of the project, and the state Department of Administration reached a tentative agreement on the new occupancy date after discussions about the time frame for getting the nursing education facility outfitted and ready for students and faculty.
According to a news release, state officials had said the original two-month window to outfit the nursing center was ambitious, and the new date should minimize disruption.
“The new time frame benefits the nursing programs at RIC and URI as it will give them a wider window of time to create what will be the most advanced nursing education facility in Rhode Island,” said Department of Administration Director Michael DiBiase, in a statement.
The agreement does not impact the other primary tenant at the facility, Brown University. Its movement of administrative offices into South Street Landing remains on schedule.
In addition to the nursing education center and the administrative offices for Brown, which will occupy the renovated former electrical power plant, the completed project will include a 744-space parking garage and housing for graduate students. Construction of the parking garage is progressing alongside the power plant building. Construction of the student housing will begin once the parking facility is completed.
