R.I. Port Services named terminal operator by QDC

R.I. PORT SERVICES has been awarded the terminal operator RFP for the Port of Davisville in North Kingstown by the Quonset Development Corporation.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Quonset Development Corp. has named Rhode Island-based company R.I. Port Services as the new terminal operating agency for container handling at the Port of Davisville, the seventh largest auto importer in North America.

The announcement comes after the QDC issued a request for proposals in late July, seeking a qualified company to provide terminal services. R.I. Port Services will provide container handling, receiving and staging on Terminal 2 at the Port of Davisville.

“Our search was guided by a recommendation of the Legislative Port Commission earlier this year that called for maintaining the Port of Davisville as a public port, open to all shipping customers under the operational control and direction of the QDC,” Steven J. King, managing director of the QDC, said in a statement.

“R.I. Port Services delivered the most committed and thoughtful approach to our request, which will allow us to expand our business at the Port and help our state grow,” King added.

R.I. Port Services was formed by the collaboration of Seaview Transportation and New England Stevedoring Services, both Ocean State companies. According to the QDC release, both companies have considerable experience in terminal operations, stevedoring and intermodal logistics. Eric Moffett of Seaview and Tom McGree of New England Stevedoring will serve as the principals for the new company.

The need for a terminal operator comes as the development corporation nears the completion of several terminal improvements to the port, including a new mobile harbor crane and more than 3.5 acres of platform improvements to the Pier 2 loading area.

QDC officials estimate the new shipping terminal should be fully operational by December.
