PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Quality Institute, a nonprofit that is responsible for the state’s Health Information Exchange, known as CurrentCare, laid off seven full-time employees on June 26, according to Laura Adams, the Quality Institute’s president and CEO.

Adams called the move “a reduction in force.”

The Institute had 56 full-time employees as of Jan. 3, with a FY 2013 budget of about $15 million, and a payroll of about $5.3 million, according to the institute.

“Like any company or organization, we routinely analyze our workforce needs to make sure we are operating at optimal levels of efficiency,” Adams said in an email statement. “Our latest analysis showed that, as some of our federal grant programs begin to wind down and we complete the scope of work on several projects, we had the ability to create efficiencies by consolidating some job functions and to better align skill sets with the needs of our ongoing projects.”

Unfortunately, she continued, “This meant that some positions needed to be eliminated. This was a difficult decision, but necessary in order to position the R.I. Quality Institute for continued success. We are providing severance and transition assistance to these employees. We do not anticipate any additional reductions in workforce.”

In addition to these workforce reductions, Lisa DiPrete, the former director of communications at the Rhode Island Quality Institute, is no longer working there as of a few weeks ago, according to Adams.
