R.I. Taxpayers disbands

PORTSMOUTH – R.I. Taxpayers is no longer.
The association, which said it advocated for “honest, effective and fiscally sound government on behalf of individual and business taxpayers” and published a newsletter called Taxpayer Times five days a week, stopped operations on Thursday.

“Despite efforts to raise the necessary funds to keep our advocacy on behalf of the taxpayers of Rhode Island fiscally liquid, they have fallen short,” the association wrote in an email.
Formerly known as the Rhode Island Statewide Coalition, the group was founded 12 years ago. It said in the email that with the passing of founder and past president Harry Staley in June 2014, the group was unable to maintain the fundraising levels that he was “so successful in driving.”
The group weighed in on topics ranging from RhodeWorks, pension reform and 38 Studios to the failed proposal to move the Pawtucket Red Sox out of Pawtucket and into a new stadium in downtown Providence.
A spokesperson for R.I. Taxpayers could not be reached for comment.
