R.I. approves e-proof for auto insurance

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is now one of 35 states which permit the use of electronic proof of auto-insurance coverage.
Legislation passed last month in both chambers of the legislature ensures Rhode Island’s place on the list of 35. The earlier legislation, signed by the governor on April 18, amended a section of law directing police officers – as part of investigating a motor vehicle offense or accident – to accept proof of liability insurance in electronic format, via a smartphone, tablet or other electronic device.
The approved legislation amended a preceding section of the same law that defines “proof of financial security” within Rhode Island’s Motor Vehicle Reparations Act.
Sponsored in the House by Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy, D-Hopkinton, and in the Senate by Sen. David E. Bates, R-Barrington, the bills add the following language to that definition: “Proof of financial security may be produced in either paper or electronic format. Acceptable electronic formats include display of documentation on any mobile electronic device.” •
