R.I. boating companies to celebrate National Marina Day in Newport
SOME OF RHODE ISLAND'S boating companies plan to celebrate National Marina Day on Saturday in Newport with teaching sessions ranging from docking to anchoring designed to attract local residents of all boating skill levels.
NEWPORT – To celebrate National Marina Day, a handful of Rhode Island boating companies will offer a day of powerboat lessons in Newport on Saturday, June 8 in an endeavor to make boating more attractive to local residents of all skill levels.
The one-hour sessions, which will begin between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and cost $10 each, will be hosted by boat training company Confident Captain in boats from the Freedom Boat Club and Marinemax.
Each session will focus on a different boating skill, from docking to anchoring, and all will take place on the water at the Newport Yachting Center, which is also hosting the Sail Newport Youth Challenge this weekend.
Though the companies are hosting the official event in Newport, organizers hope that local boaters will also mark the national day informally.
“We hope boaters will also celebrate in their own way on June 8, by taking non-boating friends and family onboard to introduce them to the joys of boating and the beauty of our Rhode Island waters,” R.I. Marine Trades Association CEO Wendy Mackie said in a statement endorsing the event.
The Association of Marina Industries began National Marina Day in 2001, and this year’s celebration will include events throughout this country.
Organizers have recommended that interested participants sign up for the Newport sessions online in advance at www.rimta.org.
