RHODE ISLAND business owners face a looming March 31 deadline to file their annual reports with the Secretary of State's office.

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s 30,000 for-profit business owners face a March 31 deadline to file their annual reports with the state.

“We’ve made improvements to our website that make it easier for companies to do business with us,” Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis said in a prepared statement reminding businesses of the deadline. “By providing 24/7 access, we enable our customers to do what they do best, innovate and build their business.”

Companies can file via the website until 11:59 p.m. on March 31 and still make the deadline. Business owners who would rather file by mail or in person need to do so by 4:30 p.m. on March 31.

“Corporate record-keeping is one of the duties we have under the law, and our priority is to give the public access to up-to-date information. The business community should be recognized for its contribution to that goal,” said Mollis.

Failure to file can result in fines and the revocation of a company’s certificate of incorporation or certificate of authority – making it illegal for them to conduct business-related activities in the state.

Nonprofit corporations and limited liability companies do not face the March 31 deadline, but are required to file annual reports in June and November, respectively.
