R.I. car insurance? rates second highest

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is the second-most-expensive state for car insurance, according to a new InsuranceQuotes.com report.

Rhode Island drivers pay 45 percent more than the national average, according to the report. Providence County drivers pay 10 percent more than the Rhode Island average, while Newport County drivers pay up to 26 percent less.

Rhode Island is a distant second to Michigan, which held the report’s top spot for having drivers pay the most for car insurance – 135.9 percent more than the national average.

Connecticut was the sixth-most expensive, at a rate 26 percent higher than the national average.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners reported that the average annual cost of car insurance nationwide was $815 in 2012 – the most recent data available.
