R.I. fisherman honored as Champion of Change

NARRAGANSETT – Rhode Island commercial fisherman Christopher Brown was honored by the White House on Oct. 7 as a Champion of Change for Sustainable Seafood.

In addition to being president of the Seafood Harvesters of America, representing 17 fishing organizations from the Bering Sea to the Gulf of Mexico and north to New England, Brown is president of the R.I. Commercial Fishermen’s Association and the East Farm Commercial Fisheries Center.

Brown said while significant progress has been made in rebuilding U.S. fisheries, there’s more work to be done. He said mistrust exists between New England fishermen and the National Marine Fisheries Service over catch limits.

“We’re working hard on this,” he said. •
