PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island gas prices hit their lowest point this year after dropping another 5 cents over the past week, according to the weekly gasoline survey by AAA Southern New England.
The average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline was $3.44. The previous low was $3.45 on Feb. 3. Locally, prices are 9 cents less than they were a month ago, but 10 cents more than the national average for regular unleaded at $3.34.
A year ago at this time, Rhode Island’s average price was 21 cents higher at $3.65.
Prices for unleaded regular range from $3.27 to $3.68.
Average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.69 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.80 for premium unleaded and $3.83 for diesel.
“The combination of strong oil supplies and the switchover from summer grade fuel to less expensive winter blends at refineries continue to drive prices lower,” Lloyd P. Albert, AAA Southern New England’s senior vice president of public and government affairs, said. “This is great news for motorists who are on a budget and looking to save wherever possible.”
In Massachusetts, the price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline dropped 4 cents to $3.40, according to the weekly survey. A year ago, Massachusetts’ average price was 14 cents higher at $3.54.
Prices in Massachusetts range from $3.21 to $3.79. Average per-gallon prices for different grades of gas ranged from $3.62 for mid-grade unleaded to $3.74 for premium unleaded and $3.83 for diesel.
AAA’s fuel-saving tip of the week: If the emissions malfunction indicator or “check engine light” comes on, have the vehicle serviced immediately.
