PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island has an extended deadline to submit its application for a FEMA disaster declaration for the January blizzard.
Gov. Gina M. Raimondo announced Tuesday the Federal Emergency Management Agency had granted her request for an extension until March 27. The additional time will allow cities and towns to detail their damages from the three-day storm, which began Jan. 26, she explained in a statement.
“We are doing everything we can to ensure Rhode Island receives any federal assistance available, and I appreciate this extension from FEMA,” she wrote.
Peter Gaynor, the state’s newly appointed emergency management director, said the agency is working as quickly as it can with counterparts in cities and towns to compile all of the costs incurred in the blizzard.
A preliminary estimate last week put the cost of the storm at $9 million, based on initial reporting from towns, cities and state agencies. The state’s Department of Transportation has already hit its budget for winter operations.
