PROVIDENCE – When it comes to buying gifts for their pooches during the holiday season, Rhode Island is no New Jersey, but it’s better than Kentucky.
Garden State pet owners topped the “Santa Dog Index” because they expect to spend $30.01 on holiday gifts for their dogs, according to TheNosePrint.com, a website from Big Heart Pet Brands, the maker of Milk-Bone and Pup-Peroni.
Rhode Island ranked 23rd on the list, in the middle of the pack, with average spending on dogs estimated at $22.38, below the national average of $23.10.
Kentucky was last among the states, with $8.63 in spending expected.
To come up with the list, the website polled 3,000 Americans about their dog-related holiday habits, including whether their dog is involved in gift-giving, stocking-stuffing, Christmas sweater-wearing and other holiday traditions.
Massachusetts ranked the highest among the New England states at 17th, with $22.91 in holiday spending for dogs. New Hampshire was 28th with $21.50 in expected spending; Vermont was 38th with $17.67; and Connecticut, 44th with $14.30. Maine was 48th with $11.
According to TheNosePrint.com’s Santa Dog Index, 71 percent of U.S. dog owners will give their dog a gift this holiday season. Of that number, 72 percent said they do it to express their love for their pets.
Others include their pets in holiday traditions – 48 percent hang a Christmas stocking for their dog, and 43 percent include their dog in a photo for a family holiday card. Twenty-nine percent admit dressing up their pooch in a holiday-themed outfit, the website said.
