R.I. nonprofits face disaster application deadline for Sandy damage

PRIVATE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS in Rhode Island have until midnight tonight to submit applications for a U.S. Small Business Administration loan to cover physical losses due to Hurricane Sandy, which dumped tons of sand on Atlantic Avenue in Westerly's Misquamicut neighborhood and delivered a punishing storm surge.

ATLANTA – Rhode Island nonprofits that plan to submit disaster loan applications for physical property damages caused by Hurricane Sandy have until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Eligible private nonprofit organizations include, but are not limited to, food kitchens, homeless shelters, museums, libraries, community centers, schools and colleges.

The SBA offers low interest disaster loans to private nonprofit organizations for physical losses up to its loan limits. Approved loans can also be increased “for protective measures to lessen similar future damages,” according to a SBA release.

Qualified nonprofits may apply online using the electronic loan application on the SBA’s secure website.

The Jan. 2 deadline is only for nonprofits returning applications for physical property damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. The deadline to return economic injury applications is Aug. 5.
