R.I. officers raise money for Braintree charity

While preparing for Monday’s Boston Marathon, Rhode Island State trooper raised $11,000 for the Braintree, Mass., charity Cops for Kids with Cancer.
Col. Steven G. O’Donnell, superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and commissioner of the R.I. Department of Public Safety, said six troopers will participate in the 119th running of the marathon. The troopers will join over 100 law enforcement and military professionals, who will provide an additional layer of security from inside the race itself, O’Donnell said.
The funds raised for the charity are meant to commemorate the troopers’ participation in the marathon, he added.
Robert P. Faherty, chairman of the charity and retired superintendent and chief of the Boston Police Department, said the gift will go toward at least two families, who get $5,000 each. The charity has helped 365 families since 2008, he said.
“We try to [support] six families a month so this a great gift from the Rhode Island State Police,” said Faherty. “It means a great deal to Cops for Kids with Cancer to get this funding. We’re a real nonprofit. Everyone’s volunteer; no one gets paid, so all the money raised goes to the families who have a child with cancer and are in financial. We try to stay in Massachusetts but how can you say no? We do all of New England now.”
