PROVIDENCE – As of November, Rhode Island has regained 92.5 percent of the jobs it lost during the recession, the state Department of Labor and Training said recently.
Rhode Island lost 39,800 jobs during its recession from December 2006 to August 2009, and has regained 36,800 jobs. Connecticut and Maine have recovered 72 percent of the jobs lost between their peak and low employment periods.
Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont have recouped all of their employment lost during their respective recessions. The U.S. also has regained all of the 8.7 million jobs it lost between January 2008 and February 2010, the high and low employment levels for the nation.
In addition, Rhode Island had the third-highest percentage increase in employment in New England over the year in November, at 0.9 percent, to 492,700.
New Hampshire experienced the greatest percentage gain in employment at 2.1 percent, to 674,800, followed by Massachusetts at 1.9 percent, to 3.6 million. Connecticut’s job numbers stayed the same over the year at 1.7 million, while Vermont’s employment climbed 0.5 percent to 315,000, and Maine’s employment grew 0.2 percent to 612,300.
Rhode Island’s unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a percentage point in November to 5.3 percent from 5.5 percent in November 2015, the DLT said. Rhode Island’s labor force grew 0.5 percent over the year to 555,500.
