R.I. primary-care law nears implementation

Posted 11/19/12

PROVIDENCE – The implementation of the primary-care provider-designation law taking effect on Jan. 1 is moving forward. Under the new law, health insurers will need to submit plans to the R.I. Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner (OHIC) to ensure that they will meet the law’s requirements.

Under the law, commercial health-insurance issuers must collect information on a subscriber’s primary-care physician at the time of enrollment – and once a year thereafter. The law applies to all commercially insured subscribers and any dependents residing in Rhode Island.

OHIC has asked stakeholders to submit their ideas and considerations on how the new law should be implemented.

Stakeholders were asked to send e-mail input by Nov. 20 to Patrick Tigue at patrick.tigue@ohic.ri.gov. •
