R.I. pump prices drop 3 cents

PROVIDENCE – Gas prices in Rhode Island dropped 3 cents this week after surging 10 cents to the highest-ever price in September last week, according to AAA Southern New England.

The cost of self-serve, unleaded regular averaged $3.96 per gallon in the Ocean State – down by 3 cents from last week, but up 10 cents over the last month – according to the trade group’s weekly survey of Rhode Island’s pump prices.

AAA recommended consumers shop around for the best deal as the range in prices for unleaded regular in the Ocean State was 25 cents. Rhode Islanders could find regular unleaded priced anywhere from a low of $3.82 to a high of $4.07.

Rhode Island’s price is 15 cents greater than the $3.81 national average for a gallon of self-pump, regular unleaded.

Prices ranged from $4.14 per gallon for midgrade and diesel to $4.25 for premium unleaded.

A year ago, gas in the Ocean State cost an average $3.68 for a gallon of regular unleaded.

Gas prices in Massachusetts dropped 7 cents to $3.84 for a gallon of self-serve unleaded regular, marking the first decrease in pump prices since July, according to AAA. Pump prices in the Bay State have increased 10 cents over the past month.

Massachusetts gas prices ranged from $4.04 per gallon for midgrade unleaded to $4.17 for premium and $4.11 for diesel.

A year ago at this time, the Massachusetts average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $3.56.
