NEW YORK - Rhode Island was ranked the worst place in New England for women to live and work, according to an analysis by iVillage.com.

The site, an NBCUniversal subsidiary, ranked states across the country by overall health, economic well-being, access to affordable child care, education rate, female representation in government and reproductive rights.

Rhode Island ranked last in New England, behind Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, respectively.

Rhode Island’s score was mostly due to its lack of female representation in government. “Politics is an all-boys club in Rhode Island, and it’s been that way for a long, long time,” said the site.

The only Rhode Island woman elected to Congress left in 1991 and the Ocean State has never had a female governor.

Still, Rhode Island ranked No. 16 in the nation with a score of 6.3 out of 10. Comparatively, the No. 1 state – Connecticut – had a score of 8.9 and Missisipi, which ranked 50th, had a score of 1.7.

Women in Rhode Island were among the top 10 earners in the country, pulling in more than $40,000 a year on average, and 30 percent of women 25 or older have a four-year college degree, according to the report.

Only 14 percent of female Rhode Islanders lack health insurance, 5 percentage points lower than the national average of 19 percent.
