OAKLAND, Calif. – Rhode Island ranked No. 17 on the 2013 edition of U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Index report from Clean Edge Inc., a leading clean technology research and consulting firm.

The state index measured each of the 50 states using a 100-point scale, calculated by percentage based on a several indicators including clean electricity, clean transportation, green building, policy, incentives and venture capital.

Rhode Island ranked 17th with a score of 44.5. Comparatively, California took the lead spot with a score of 91.7 and neighboring Massachusetts ranked second with a score of 77.8.

In the policy category, which measures states’ implementation of “important policies,” Rhode Island ranked No. 18 with a score of 62.8.

The two-pronged capital category measured the latest state-level investment activity as well as presence, concentration and “vibrancy of human and intellectual capital” in each state. Neighboring Massachusetts led this category with a score of 89.3 and Rhode Island ranked No. 14 with a score of 42.5.

The Ocean State took the No. 28 spot when it came to the technology category, which tracks the progress of states’ deployment across three subcategories: clean electricity, clean transportation, and energy intelligence and green building.

According to the Clean Edge report, technology was the weakest category for states from the Northeast, as the region lacks the renewable generation resources of their Great Plains and Western counterparts.

Clean Edge also ranked the country’s 50 largest metropolitan areas on its 2013 U.S. Clean Tech Leadership Metro Index. Overall on this index, the Providence metropolitan area ranked 34th out of 50 with a score of 21.5.

In both the green buildings and advanced transportation categories, the Providence metro slipped to 42nd. The metropolitan area did fairly well in the clean electricity & carbon management category, however, earning the No. 20 rank.

In the clean-tech investment, innovation & workforce category, the Providence metropolitan area ranked No. 27 with a score of 15. Comparatively, top ranker San Jose, Calif., earned a perfect score, San Francisco and Boston earned scores of 71.4 and 63.6, respectively.
