PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island homeless assistance programs have received nearly $6 million in Continuum of Care grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Sen. Jack F. Reed said Tuesday.

The funding will support more than 40 homeless assistance projects.

“Whether it’s helping a homeless veteran who is struggling with PTSD or a family that is facing an eviction, these grants help stabilize vulnerable individuals and families. We are committed to preventing and ending homelessness throughout the state, and these federal funds are vital to keeping that commitment,” Reed said in a statement.

According to HUD’s 2016 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, 1,160 people across Rhode Island experienced homelessness on a single night in late January.
