R.I. hospitals land $5.9M for disaster preparedness

THE R.I. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH is slated to land $5.9 million to prepare hospitals for future disasters.

WASHINGTON – The R.I. Department of Health will receive $5.9 million to help prepare medical facilities for future disasters, Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse announced Wednesday.

The state will receive $4.4 million through the Public Health Emergency Preparedness cooperative and $1.5 million in federal funding.

The money will bolster Rhode Island’s hospital preparedness program, which aims to enhance hospitals’ ability to respond to disasters and outbreaks of illness, according to the release.

“When disaster strikes, our first responders must have the resources they need to respond quickly and effectively,” Whitehouse said in a statement. “This federal funding will help ensure the state agencies we turn to in times of crisis are adequately prepared.”

In his statement, Reed cited Superstorm Sandy and the Boston Marathon bombings as examples of why health systems need such funding.
