R.I. seeks owners of $150M</br> in unclaimed assets

PROVIDENCE – The Office of the General Treasurer today released its annual unclaimed property list.

The state is holding about $150 million in unclaimed property on behalf of 24,000 people and businesses, General Treasurer Frank T. Caprio said. Of that, $28 million has been added to the list in the past year.

“As General Treasurer, one of my most important responsibilities is to find people whose names appear on the unclaimed property list and reunite them with their money in a customer-friendly way,” Caprio said. “The publication of the list marks the beginning of our push to correctly identify people who have unclaimed property in the system and get them their money.”

Items on the list include inactive bank accounts, payroll checks, stocks and dividends, life insurance policies, customer deposits or overpayments and safe deposit boxes.

The entire unclaimed property list can be found online at www.treasury.state.ri.us. Once there, go to “search unclaimed property,” then type in your last name or business name to see if it appears on the list.

People and businesses on the list will be prompted to enter their current contact information. The state then will mail them a claim form, with instructions on how to claim their property.

The process is free. It is conducted through the mail both for privacy purposes and to help ensure the correct claimant is receiving the funds, Caprio said.
