PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island will host the 2015 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, an event that is expected to occupy more than 4,800 hotel room nights and bring more than 3,000 athletes as well as championship coaches, officials, and fans here, the Providence Warwick Convention announced Tuesday.
“This event will provide a significant economic boost at a time of year that local hotels typically have lower occupancy rates,” John Gibbons, executive director of the R.I. Sports Commission, said in a statement.
More than 100 teams from across the United States will stay in 15 hotels in Providence, Warwick, and Lincoln when the championship is held Feb. 25-28, 2015 primarily at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence and at Warwick’s Thayer Arena.
The championships were last held in this area in 2008.
“Sport events are a powerful revenue generator for Rhode Island, particularly when they involve young athletes who often travel with their families,” James Bennett, chairman of the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority, said in prepared remarks.
The Warwick Figure Skaters, a nonprofit organization that serves skaters, parents, and skating fans ages 3 through adult, will serve as host club.
The 2013 U.S. Synchronized Championships will take place in Plymouth, Mich. The 2014 championships will take place in Colorado Springs, Colo.
