R.I. to host National Governors Assoc. summer meeting in ’17

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island will host the National Governors Association’s summer meeting in 2017.

The association announced on Monday that Rhode Island has been chosen to host the meeting, which will be held July 13-16.

“It is an honor to be selected to host the nation’s governors in Rhode Island for the first time in more than 15 years,” Gov. Gina M. Raimondo said. “With our unique natural beauty, culture, history and top-notch meeting venues, Rhode Island serves as the perfect backdrop for us to discuss the innovative ways we can strengthen our economy and create opportunities for our constituents. This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase Rhode Island and all we have to offer.”

Providence last hosted the NGA summer meeting in 2001.

“We’re excited to bring the nation’s governors to Rhode Island, and we thank Governor Raimondo for her invitation,” NGA Vice Chair and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who will serve as NGA chair during the meeting, said in a statement. “NGA meetings are an opportunity for leaders from around the country to share best practices and discuss innovative solutions that improve state government.”

NGA’s nine-governor executive committee picked Rhode Island for its accommodations and venue options, as well as its overall appeal.

The state’s bid demonstrated its ability to meet all of the association’s criteria for hosting a summer meeting, including location; hotel and venue space; and transportation, security and volunteer needs.

The summer meeting is one of two official business meetings NGA holds each year. The next winter meeting will be held in Washington, D.C., Feb. 19-22. The next summer meeting will be held in Des Moines, Iowa, July 14-17.
