PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island will receive $474,400 in federal funding to support emergency food and shelter programs for the hungry and homeless, the state’s federal delegation announced Thursday.
Through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program, funding may be used by local social service agencies to offer food, housing and utility assistance for those in need.
“This federal funding will help fight poverty in Rhode Island. This grant helps local nonprofits put food on the table and provide shelter for those in need. By working together with local service agencies, this cost-effective program builds the capacity of food pantries and shelter programs in high-need areas,” U.S. Sen. Jack F. Reed said in a statement.

Local jurisdictions qualify for EFSP allocations based on criteria including population, unemployment and poverty levels.

Providence County will receive $362,309 in EFSP funding and $112,091 will be granted to the Rhode Island State Set-Aside Committee, which may award money to additional communities throughout the state.

In each community receiving federal money, a local board advertises the availability of funding, establishes priorities and selects local nonprofit or government organizations that will get the money.
