WASHINGTON – Rhode Island will receive $6.2 million in grants from the federal Affordable Care Act to benefit community health centers, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Tuesday.

Thundermist Health Center in Woonsocket will receive $5 million through the Building Capacity Program and $228,812 from the Immediate Facility Improvement Program.

Also from the Immediate Facility Improvement Program, Comprehensive Community Action Inc. in Cranston and East Bay Community Action Program in Newport will each receive $500,000.

The grants will help the three programs serve an additional 2,700 Rhode Islanders, according to the release.

“President Obama’s health care law is making community health centers in Rhode Island stronger,” said Sebelius in a prepared statement. “For many Americans, community health centers are the major source of care that ranges from prevention to treatment of chronic diseases.”

“This investment will expand our ability to provide high-quality care to millions of people while supporting good-paying jobs in communities across the country,” added Sebelius.

Affordable Care Act funding awarded today - totaling more than $728 million nationwide - will support renovation and construction projects across the United States, “boosting health centers’ ability to care for additional patients and creating jobs,” according to the release.

The awards, which are part of a series of capital investments made available through the Affordable Care Act, will provide $9.5 billion to expand services over the next five years and $1.5 billion to support construction and renovation projects at health centers across the country.
