PROVIDENCE – More than one job was held by 5.6 percent of Rhode Islanders 16 years old and older last year, according to data released Friday by the state Department of Labor and Training.
The DLT, citing federal Bureau of Labor Statistics data, said that represented a 0.8 percentage point decrease from the number of multiple jobholders in 2014. It was the fourth-largest over-the-year decrease among states and the Ocean State’s lowest level since 2012, the DLT said.
In 2015, Rhode Island was tied for the 19th highest multiple jobholder rate in the country, while South Dakota had the highest rate at 5.9 percent and Florida had the lowest at 3.5 percent.
Within New England, Rhode Island and Connecticut tied for the fourth-highest multiple jobholder rate, behind Maine at 8.2 percent, Vermont at 7.2 percent and New Hampshire at 6.5 percent. Massachusetts had the lowest multiple jobholder rate at 5.5 percent, the DLT said. All New England states had multiple jobholder rates higher than the national average of 4.9 percent.

Rhode Island’s unemployment rate was second-highest in New England in July, the DLT said.
The Ocean State’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate was 5.5 percent, while Connecticut’s rate was 5.7 percent, Massachusetts’ unemployment rate was 4.1 percent, Maine’s was 3.9 percent and Vermont’s was 3.2 percent. New Hampshire was the lowest at 2.9 percent.
Rhode Island’s unemployment rate dropped four-tenths of a percentage point over the year, but was still higher than the national rate of 4.9 percent.
