Report: R.I. women make 80 cents on the dollar

WASHINGTON – Women in Rhode Island make 80 cents for every dollar paid to men, according to a new report released Tuesday by the National Partnership for Women and Families.

In Rhode Island, the median pay for a woman working full time, year round is $40,532 annually, while the median annual pay for a man is $50,567 – a yearly gap of $10,035 between full time working men and women in the Ocean State, according to the report.

According to the report – “Working Women and the Wage Gap” – women of color experienced an even greater wage disparity.

African American women working full time in Rhode Island are paid 65 cents for every dollar paid to men – a different of $17,466 per year. Hispanic women, on average, were paid 47 cents to the dollar - $26,958 annually.

If the wage gap were eliminated in the Ocean State, Rhode Island women would have enough money for roughly five additional months of mortgage and utility payments, , three years of family health insurance premiums or 2,532 additional gallons of gasoline, according to the report.

Across the country, Rhode Island’s gender wage disparity ranked 12th and was better than the 77 cent national average.

The smallest wage gap existed in the District of Columbia, where women make 93 cents for every dollar a man makes.

The largest disparity was in Wyoming, where a woman working full time, year round makes 64 cents to every dollar the average man in the state makes.
