PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation is giving a $50,000 grant to the Rhode Island Business Group on Health to roll-out a “Choosing Wisely – RI” campaign to reduce waste in the state’s health care delivery system.
Created by the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation and Consumer Reports, the campaign will encourage physicians, patients and other health care stakeholders to think and talk about the overuse of health care resources in the United States. Locally, Amica Insurance and Brown University already have adopted Choosing Wisely for their employees and families.
“We are pleased to bring these tools to Rhode Island. Business, consumers and providers have a common interest in helping to reduce waste in our health delivery system and being more effective consumers,” said Albert Charbonneau, RIBGH’s executive director. “The program will begin with a pilot on reducing the over-use of opioids, which is a major problem for Rhode Island.”
Through Choosing Wisely, RIBGH will give consumers, providers and employers in Rhode Island access to a national learning network of communities and organizations that are launching campaigns to reduce waste. Plans call for the creation of a free micro-website for Rhode Island organizations. Nationally, the program partners with more than 70 physician specialty societies and is endorsed by organizations ranging from AARP to the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement.
“Every grant we make underscores our commitment to moving Rhode Island forward. We work closely with our donors and grantees to ensure there are the resources and the resourcefulness to achieve great impact,” said Neil D. Steinberg, the foundation’s president and CEO.
The Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island.
The Rhode Island Business Group on Health is a voluntary nonprofit organization with more than 90 member companies, consisting of large and small businesses, payers, brokers, physician groups and hospital systems. The group promotes better care delivery, transparency and healthier outcomes at affordable, predictable costs.
