RIC students honored at theater festival

PROVIDENCE – Seven Rhode Island College students and professors were honored during the 2013 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in early February in Hyannis, Mass.
Among those receiving awards were junior Sarah Pothier of East Providence, who was awarded the Richard Maltby Jr. Award for Excellence in Musical Theater, which includes a full scholarship to the Broadway Theater Project in Tampa, Fla., and senior Stephanie Harrop from Norton, Mass., who was awarded the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas Award for Excellence in Design Technology which will allow her to work for and train with Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas.
Rhode Island College was one of five schools invited to present an entire production at the festival that will be judged as part of a national competition for the best collegiate performance in the country. Winners for that competition will be announced this spring.
“Rhode Island College has for many years educated performers who have gone on to be highly successful singers, actors and dancers,” said RIC President Nancy Carriuolo in a statement. “The success of our students, faculty and professional staff this year at the regional American College Theater Festival, though, is truly phenomenal.” •
