PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Education has launched its Academy for Transformative Leadership, an initiative meant to recruit, prepare and support leaders who can help transform the state’s lowest-performing schools.

“School leaders have a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of their students, their staff members and their community,” Deborah A. Gist, commissioner of elementary and secondary education, said in a statement. “Excellent leadership is always important in schools facing the challenges of persistent low achievement or high dropout rates.”

The five leaders in the first academy class include two Providence teachers, two Providence assistant principals, and an administrator from Greenville, Miss. Participants will attain certification as administrators and commit to working for at least three years in one of the 29 schools the R.I. Department of Education has identified as a focus or priority school in need of intervention.

The academy is financed through the department’s $75 million federal Race to the Top grant that it won in 2010. The academy will cost $755,419 for this fiscal year. •
