PROVIDENCE – A $12 million project to improve pedestrian access along portions of North and South Main Streets downtown is expected to begin in early April, the R.I. Department of Transportation said Thursday.
The project will make the sidewalks and ramps compliant with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, and also will include resurfacing portions of the roadway. The work, from Smith to James streets, is scheduled to begin April 4.
The project has an $11.1 million budget, as well as a $900,000 contingency.
The project scope includes improving crosswalks, adding “bump-outs” for pedestrians at non-signalized intersections and installing new traffic signals and fiber optic cables.
The work is expected to be completed in summer 2018 and will include temporary sidewalk, lane and shoulder closures, according to the DOT.
