PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Transportation received two awards from the Construction Management Association of America for its work on the Wickford Junction Train Station project, the New England branch the association announced Thursday.

DOT received the 2012 Infrastructure Project of the Year award for projects less than $30 million and DOT’s administrator, James L. Eng, was named the 2012 Person of the Year.

“This public-private partnership was a successful venture because of the true team approach that was taken,” Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee said in a statement. “Working together every step of the way, RIDOT and the developer created a project of which all Rhode Islanders can be proud.”

The Wickford Junction train station project cost $58 million to complete and includes a single-side commuter rail platform on a new siding track, a 1,100 car parking garage, a drop-off and pick-up area for cars and buses, bicycle parking, new access roads, storm water management facilities, new lighting and landscaping.

“The Wickford Junction Train Station is not just an important commuter rail link for our state; it is an important construction project for our Department,” RIDOT Director Michael P. Lewis said in prepared remarks.

“These two awards are a testament to all of the men and women who put in the time and effort to make this an outstanding transportation project,” he added.

Eng was chosen in “recognition of his leadership in creating the DOT Design Build Program, years of community service on the Braintree Conservation Commission and planning board and continued involvement with organizations within the construction profession,” according to the release.

The Wickford Junction Train Station will start commuter rail service on Monday, April 23, offering commuters 20 trips per day north to T.F. Green Airport, Providence and into Boston.
