RIIFF celebrates 35th anniversary with encore showings

CUMBERLAND – In continued celebration of its 35th anniversary, and as part of their monthly film series, the Rhode Island International Film Festival showed four movies around the theme of “films with a heart” at the Second Stage Studio in Cumberland on Thursday.

The four films played were:

  • “The Dogcatcher” | Daria Woszek, director | 30 min. | Poland, 2015.
    “The Dogcatcher” is a black comedy telling a story of a man who kidnaps dogs for ransom, however, returns them in glory of a savior. One day he kidnaps a German shepherd that turns out to be a stray dog.

  • “Eisenherz” | Franz Maria Quitt, director | 20 min. | Austria, 2016.
    Jacob, a 9-year-old shy dreamer, falls instantly in love when Mailin, 11, and her father move into the apartment across the yard. Although his best friend advises him against it, he tries to get in touch with her. After a failed attempt and romantic insight from his mother, he wins her attention with a letter. While Jacob longs for Mailin’s answer, he realizes that his parents’ relationship is no longer what it once was.

  • “Her Friend Adam” | Ben Petrie, director | 16 min. | USA, 2015.
    A boyfriend’s jealous impulse spirals out of control in 16 minutes of romantic doom.

  • “La Voce” | David Uloth, director | 22 min. | Canada, 2015.
    Edgar works in a slaughterhouse. He loves opera and Ginette, the stripper of his dreams. Edgar is about to ask her to marry him when he finds her bedding her boss. In shock, he loses his voice and unfortunately finds himself with the voice of a pig.

The event was a continuation of the previous year’s festival and an opportunity for those who couldn’t attend to see a curated collection of the independent films aired at the festival.

The 2017 festival will take place Aug. 8-13.
