PROVIDENCE – Torey Malatia has been named CEO, general manager and president of Rhode Island Public Radio, the NPR member station for Rhode Island.
Malatia recently was the CEO of WBEZ/Chicago Public Media, according to information provided by RIPR. He brings nearly two decades of experience to the position, and starts the job at RIPR Sept. 14.
The search was led by former board member, Marie Langlois, and current board member, Adam Hamblett.
“We are thrilled that such an icon and innovator in the public broadcasting industry is joining the RIPR team,” Langlois said in a statement. “The high level of interest during our national search for general manager demonstrates just how strong our organization has become, and we’re confident Torey will position us well for the future. Torey is a leader in pioneering new digital experiences for the public radio audience. He has worked in the public radio system at the highest level, managing a station that was strongly supported by the community.”
Malatia called Rhode Island “an inspiring place, not only for its natural beauty but also for its historical spirit of valuing the worth of each individual.”

Rhode Island Public Radio also will host its annual gala on Sept. 21, an event featuring On Point’s Tom Ashbrook interviewing NPR White House Correspondent Tamara Keith. Malatia will meet with listeners at the gala. Event information can be found HERE.
