RIPTA extending service to help MBTA commuters

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Public Transit Authority has special buses in service today to assist commuters affected by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s decision to suspend commuter rail service south of Providence.
RIPTA is providing buses to connect commuters from stations at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick and Wickford Junction in North Kingstown to the Providence train station, where MBTA service is still running to Boston.
RIPTA, in cooperation with the state Department of Transportation, has coordinated this emergency service to coordinate with times that trains would normally be running.
RIPTA does not know if the MBTA suspension of service will continue Wednesday, but will update commuters as needed. Check RIPTA.com for schedule updates.

Also, due to extreme cold, RIPTA is extending the hours at the Kennedy Plaza Intermodal Transportation Center until 8 p.m. through Feb. 20 to give passengers a place to stay warm while waiting for buses. The building usually closes at 7 p.m.
Hours for the ticket window will not be extended during this time, and the window will be staffed during its normal weekday hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
People seeking information on warming centers in their communities can check the R.I. Emergency Management Agency website at www.riema.ri.gov.
The National Weather Service said that a band of “moderate snow” will drop 2 to 4 inches of snow through the afternoon across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Some areas may see as much as 5 inches of snow, the agency said.
No snow is predicted for Wednesday, but Thursday’s forecast is showing a 40 percent chance of snow. Saturday has a 30 percent chance of snow, and Sunday, 50 percent.
