At first glance, Edesia Inc. and General Dynamics Electric Boat would not seem to have much in common. But they do.
Edesia recently announced plans to move its Providence-based manufacturing facility to the Quonset Business Park, saying it expected to add about 30 jobs there within the next couple years.
Electric Boat has even bigger plans for its Quonset facility. It is looking to add 650 jobs this year, with plans to bring its Rhode Island workforce to 6,000 by 2030 from the current 2,800.
Unfortunately for both employers, Quonset is not near the state’s population centers and current public transportation stops short of going into the business park.
The only logical solution is for RIPTA to make sure that it has robust transport options that can move significant numbers of people from where they live to where they work. And given the state’s interest in maintaining a vibrant urban core, RIPTA must improve its route structure to make sure that the coming employment opportunities connect with people who need jobs. •
