RIPTA to honor Rosa Parks

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Public Transit Authority will honor Rosa Parks, the African-American woman who refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus, today by participating in a re-enactment of the event that happened 59 years ago in Montgomery, Ala.
The Rosa Parks Human Rights Day Committee organized the event, which will be held at 2:30 p.m. at 280 Broad St., near Central High School. A RIPTA bus will be used in the committee’s re-enactment of Parks’ refusal to move from her bus seat, an act that triggered the Montgomery bus boycott.

In addition, RIPTA will place a commemorative bus advertisement and a digital display on board buses during the month of December.
“The sign is dedicated to Parks in honor of her role in launching the modern civil rights movement that helped end legal segregation in America,” RIPTA said.
