PROVIDENCE – The R.I. State Council on the Arts has awarded 117 grants to artists, educational institutions and nonprofits around Rhode Island, RISCA announced Friday.

Fifty-four nonprofit organizations were awarded 2013 grants through RISCA’s Investments in Arts & Culture program.

These operating support grants are intended to help organizations that produce annual programs in the arts and have developed a funding relationship with RISCA.

The 2013 Investments in Arts & Culture grantees included the Trinity Repertory Company, which was awarded $97,094 in funds, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School, which received $76,255 in funds, among others.

Eighteen schools and nonprofit organizations received grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for arts education programs.

Grantees included programs offering free access to instruments, fiddle lessons and monthly community music events in Pawtucket, a summer institute for 100 of Rhode Island’s urban secondary teachers to help them integrate the arts into classrooms, and programs throughout the Ocean State in theater, creative writing, dance and visual arts.

In addition to schools and nonprofits, 22 individual artists were awarded grants ranging from $750 to $4,000 for programs including a fully staged version of “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” with an “all abilities” cast, according to the RISCA release.

Three artists will be awarded Folk Arts Apprenticeships to develop and pass on the traditions of native eastern drumming, classical and folk Khmer dance and Kotu Kotu – talking drumming.

Four RISCA artist grantees also will receive Professional Artists Development grants for the documentation of artworks, website and social media development, and costs associated with national and international trade shows.

RISCA also awarded 16 fellowships to artists working in crafts, fiction, film & video, folk arts, photography, play/screenwriting, poetry and three-dimensional art.
