PROVIDENCE – The art museum at the Rhode Island School of Design has revamped its public presence with a new name and a new website, the museum announced Monday.
The redesign includes changing the institution’s official title to the “RISD Museum.” The name change was effected with consideration for how the institution is most commonly referred to, according to a museum release.
The museum renewed its visual identity and website with the help of New York-based design studio, Project Projects. As part of the rebranding, a new logo was adopted that will be implemented across multiple media platforms as the museum’s identifying mark.
The redesign of the website, which includes a virtual art space with a gallery-like viewing experience, was facilitated by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency dedicated to the advancement of innovation and learning by museums and libraries.
“Project Projects has created a dynamic, forward-looking brand that reflects the vibrancy of the museum and all it has to offer.” Museum Director John Smith said in prepared remarks.
According to a release, Project Projects has executed risdmuseum.org’s first redesign since its creation. This renewal will advance the IMLS’s mission of cultural and civic engagement by facilitating access to the 80,000 objects, paintings, and sculptures housed by the RISD Museum.
Despite the considerable changes, the RISD Museum and Project Projects said they have remained devoted to the Museum’s dedication to artistic expression and its unique approach to artistic interpretation in all their efforts throughout the overhaul, according to a release
“Among many other things, a museum is a space. As museums adapt, those spaces change—- they become virtual, transitional, and participatory in new ways,” Rob Giampietro and Prem Krishnamurthy, principals of Project Projects, said in a statement. “The new identity aims to emphasize the spatial nature of the RISD Museum’s approach in a way that responds to an ever-changing variety of contexts…”
