RISD grads work on prize-winning film

PROVIDENCE – Three Rhode Island School of Design alumni are enjoying international recognition for their work on “Beasts of The Southern Wild,” a coming-of-age film that this year won the top prize for dramatic film at the Sundance Film Festival and the Camera D’Or prize, given to a first-time director, at the Cannes Film Festival.
Annie Evelyn, who earned a bachelor’s degree in furniture design in 1999 and a master of fine arts in 2007, was set decorator on the film. Sophie Kosofky, who earned a bachelor’s degree in furniture design in 2006, was construction coordinator, and Eliza Zeitlin, who earned a bachelor’s degree in sculpture in 2007 assisted with her “aesthetic vision.”
Zeitlin is the sister of director Benh Zeitlin.
“Among alums the RISD work ethic is something that’s well-known,” Evelyn said in a statement. “For this film we worked literally 16-hour days – ever day – in these insane conditions, and we all kept working like that until it was done.”
‘Beasts’ is set in a fictional Louisiana bayou. Evelyn said she designed and built all the film’s sets and furnishings from scratch, exclusively using materials from the immediate environment. &#8226
