PROVIDENCE – This summer, Rhode Island College is launching graduate studies certificate programs in nonprofit leadership and child and adolescent trauma.
Overseen by RIC’s School of Social Work, the programs are designed for professionals who hold bachelor’s or advanced degrees and are seeking specialized training or further credentials.
RIC created the nonprofit graduate program in response to increasing management complexities in the field, said Nonprofit Leadership Program Director Michael Andrade.
“In talking with nonprofit leaders in the area, we learned that management of nonprofits has become much more complex in recent years,” he said. “With all the different regulatory laws and requirements around funding, many organizations are dealing with a tremendous amount of public policy.”
The program consists of five, three-credit courses taken over one summer and two semesters.
For the 18-credit child and adolescent trauma certificate, the exponential increase in the availability of research-based practices regarding trauma-informed care during the past decade makes this program valuable, said M.S.W. Program Director Jayashree Nimmagadda.
“Many of the jobs in this region specifically require that the applicant demonstrate knowledge and skill in the area of trauma-informed care,” Nimmagadda said. “Therefore, earning this certificate will help candidates to be more marketable in an increasingly competitive job market.”
With these two new graduate certificate programs, the number at RIC now totals 16, the school said.
