PROVIDENCE – PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s official website – RI.gov – ranked fourth for the second consecutive year in the national Best of the Web competition by the Center for Digital Government.

The 2012 Best of the Web awards recognize the most innovative state web portals. Sites are judged on overall efficiency, economy, functionality and design by the Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies.

“This year, RI.gov optimized the site for mobile first, desktop second. The concept is called responsive design and the result is a faster, better experience for everyone,” said the state’s release.

The state’s website offers more than 80 online government services developed cost-free by Rhode Island Interactive, the wholly owned subsidiary of eGovernment firm NIC Inc.

Coming in ahead of RI.gov were the websites for Alabama, California and Utah, respectively. Mississippi rounded out the top 5.
