technology saw heavy site traffic on Election Day

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s official website – – saw a 60 percent increase in traffic on its Board of Elections Results page during the Nov. 6 general elections, according to a release from Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee’s office.

Google Analytics reported that during the general election, the Board of Election Results page received nearly 200,000 page views, a 61.3 percent increase from the 124,000 page views during the 2008 election.

According to the release, the spike in page views can be attributed to the increase in mobile phone usage to access the Internet.

More than 20,000 page visits during the Nov. 6 election were specifically from mobile devices with an average page visit of nearly 12 seconds.

Comparatively, during the 2008 election, average site time was only 7 seconds. “So not only are users accessing the web more often from their mobile device, but they’re also spending more time reading content,” said the release.

Out of all page visits, the top three most popular mobile devices to access election results were the Apple iPhone, the Apple iPad and the Apple iPod.

“This year, optimized the site for mobile first, desktop second. The concept is called responsive design and the result is a faster, better experience for everyone without the need for additional application downloads, although an iPhone application is available in the iTunes store,” said the release.
