PROVIDENCE – Gov. Gina M. Raimondo announced today her goal of having 70 percent of working-age Rhode Islanders hold a college degree by 2025.
Currently, fewer than 45 percent of Rhode Islanders hold at least an associate degree. According to Raimondo, seven out of 10 jobs created in the state will require more than a high school diploma in the coming years.
The goal was made public at the Community College of Rhode Island, where Raimondo honored RI Promise scholars, beneficiaries of her program introduced in 2015 to make college more affordable for Rhode Islanders.
Raimondo announced a number of education initiatives this week, including Prepare RI, which helps high school students earn college credits for free, and Wavemaker Fellowships, tax credits offered to certain STEM graduates working in the state to offset the repayment schedule of college loans.

Some of the state’s additional education initiatives include:

“The surest ticket to the middle class is a college degree,” said Raimondo. “Today, I’m drawing another line in the sand: By 2025, five years after today’s 9th graders graduate high school, 70 percent of working-age Rhode Islanders will have an associate degree or higher.”

  1. OK, Gina, 75% of Rhode Islanders will have college degrees by 2025. Where will they find jobs? The outright hatred progressive politicians like Raimondo have for business keeps us an exporter of talent. We educate at taxpayer expense the workforce for the rest of the country.
